-4chan: Terrible signal to noise ratio. It’s full of low quality content.
-Reddit’s /r/pics: Too many reposts. The same pictures get cycled through ad nauseum.
-failblog: No sense of community, also full of reposts.
lolstack solves these systemic problems through the following methods:
1) Repost detection
Every time a user submits an image, a perceptual hash is calculated and compared against every other image in the database. If the image is too similar, the image is rejected automatically.
2) Democratic voting
The wisdom of the crowds is an effective means to highlight the good stuff.
3) Virtual currency incentives
Users are rewarded for producing quality content. For example, if you submit a picture or comment that receives more than 100 upvotes, then you’re credited 50 lolbucks. You’ll be able to spend these lolbucks on nifty account upgrades like colored usernames, avatar images, or more powerful upvotes for a day. Eventually users will be able to spend lolbucks on real world items.
