It's said that over 770,000 people suffer injuries - which include incorrect medication or wrong dosage - due to medical error each year and over 10% of patients that make a hospital visit will encounter some kind of complication from a human error. That is an astounding statistic. Pills are of particular concern because they are often generic and only feature a company logo on them as identification. ID My Pill is a new medical application for iOS that allows you to identify any of the pills you are prescribed or have hanging around the house just be taking a ... Read more
If nothing else, you have to commend the developers of this flight tracking iOS application for picking an absolutely brilliant name for air travel app. To be honest, I'm surprised that no one has used it before. The app was conceived at the Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design as a concept iPhone app for logging flights. But in the subsequent year or so, it has evolved into a complete flight tracking app that deals with all your travel needs. From the time that you book your flight to the moment you land Flying aims to keep you informed with up ... Read more
I don't usually take a whole heap of notice of weather apps, to be honest. I mean, they are literally only going to tell you a few things. How hot or cold it is, whether there is some form of precipitation and how windy it is. There's not a whole lot more you need to know. But occasionally, an app comes along that transcends basic information because of its sheer beauty and Idol Forecast is one of those. It is a customizable weather app for iOS that features the most glorious 'Disney-quality' animated graphics that change as the weather changes. ... Read more
It's often our initial vocal reaction to something that represents our true feelings about life. As soon as we pick up a pen and paper and take some time to think about what we have just seen, our opinions are changed by our lives and our other life experiences. So how about if you could create an application that is based on those vocal reactions. SayRoom is an iOS application that is such a place. It's a place where you can listen to the vocal reactions of fellow users on anything from cool photos to interesting places. SayRoom is ... Read more
Being a bit of a news junkie myself, I always sit up and take notice when there's a release of a new news application on the market. With our lives tending to be bombarded by sound clips versions of the real story on tv and radio, it is important for many to access news and views from as many different sources as possible in order to stay ahead of the game and know just what is going on out there in the real world. B24 RSS News Feed is a free news aggregator where you can gather a world of ... Read more
Given the amount of dithering around that Instagram has done since its acquisition by Facebook, it was really only a matter of time till someone came up with a credible alternative. However, rather than some 'new kid on the block' coming along to try and steal the almost iconic photosharing app's thunder, it is an old foe that has re-emerged. For all you newbies, Hipstamatic was the bees-knees before the Instagram revolution took hold and here it introduces its own photo sharing app for iOS known as Oggl (as in 'oggling' at photos, I guess.) This simple to use and ... Read more
Despite the fact that ebooks have taken off to the extent that Amazon's ebooks now sell more digital books than paper ones, I still feel that there is something missing with the format. It's just not the same as picking up a book and reading it from cover-to-cover. The ebook needs to deliver more to convince the rest of us non believers that it has something else to offer besides a kindle. And this iOS application could well be the kind of thing to convince me. Carmilla is a new app by DraculApps (yep, you heard it right) that not ... Read more
You only have to look at the rise of Asia when it comes to mathematics learning in the world. Their children, for one reason or another, seem to be somewhat further advanced than their 'western' equivalent and they have been dominant in mathematics for many years now. The answer may be to get your children familiar with maths a little earlier in their lives. Magic Paint with Math is a kids educational application for iOS that is geared towards kids aged between 4 and 6 that are just beginning to learn about arithmetics. It offers three different colorful levels to ... Read more
I'm not sure why I really like Melt...but I do. After all, there's really nothing that's particularly groundbreaking about this social photo and messaging application for iOS. It might be the fact that it has a very cool name or it might be the very minimalistic qualities of its simple interface. Or it might well be that it's just the place to get your favorite photos vindicated, liked and commented on. While, of course, we can always post our interesting photos on Facebook or any number of other social networks, there's no guarantee that your blaze friends will acknowledge them. ... Read more
You might have seen an item featured on both The Daily Show and the ABC News with Diane Sawyer programs recently that talked about the wild cost variations for hospital treatment in the US. In the case they cited - a young boy in need of a tonsillectomy - the family were given five different quotes from five different hospital locations for exactly the same treatment. Nothing unusual there, except for the fact that the lowest came in at US$2,800 and the highest was $21,000. Everyone involved agreed that there should be a 'price list' for treatments and somewhere they ... Read more
