According to New Yorker contributor and best selling author Malcolm Gladwell, Asian kids have a distinct advantage over the rest of the world when it comes to maths. Whereas some have purported the theory that there is an IQ differential along racial and ethnic lines, Gladwell claims that it has more to do with structure and methodology than anything else. His theory is based around the much simpler concept that Asian names for numbers are shorter than their English equivalent - meaning it is easier for them to remember more. Going down those lines, it's pretty easy to see that ... Read more

Review posted Sun 11 May '14

I guess the best way to describe a heat map is probably to think of it as a table or a spreadsheet. Rather than detailing information with numbers, however, heat maps highlight the same information but use colors instead. This makes it clearer and easier for experienced users to analyze certain aspects of information. Read Heat is an education application that uses this technology to better analyze students to see how they react and respond to questions posed in the new Common Core standards testing. It aims to find out more about how students respond to the latest formats of ... Read more

Review posted Wed 7 May '14

I really don't wanna appear to be some crazed grammar and spelling freak here but, I have to admit, there's little that get's my goat up more than poor spelling and grammar on the Internet. I'm sure we've all seen memes on our Facebook feed begging people to acknowledge the difference between there, their and they're. That’s just the half of it. The thing is, standards in spelling have dropped over the years - probably because of a change in scholastic emphasis and, let's face it, bad Internet habits. Many would rather play a mindless online game than spend some ... Read more

valuable painting in the world a few years ago, it turned the art world on it’s head. The reason for this was that it wasn't painted by Van Gogh, Picasso, Rembrandt or even Bacon. It was a painting by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt and it catapulted this lesser known artist into the big league. However, his work is still not appreciated anywhere near enough outside the critics and his loyal fans. My Guide to Gustav Klimt is a beautiful looking Android art application that offers an appreciation of this great artist's work that has been put together by long ... Read more

It wasn't that long ago when email marketing was lumped in with the dreaded 'spam' word and was something to be avoided. It had its brief day in the sun but it became obvious that blanket emailing was largely a waste of time and money and better results would come from a much more targeted audience and a marketing campaign that can be tracked and analyzed. Acumbamail is a new email marketing and tracking application that makes it simple and cheap to manage a fully customized email campaign and get stats and analysis galore to track how well it is ... I'm not sure what it is but we all seem to be completely fascinated with anything to do with outer space. I guess the romance started when Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space and was cemented into our cerebrum when Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon. The views of earth that were taken from up there were truly breathtaking and we've been in love with those images ever since. There have been plenty of sky and space apps that have tried to recapture those moment but very few have come close to making us gasp ... Read more

It was interesting to read recently that one of the first things that will change as a result of the debate involving Charter and Public Schools in New York will be the opening up of resource material to everyone for free. If all goes according to plan, resource and reference material will be available for everyone to see instead of being the reference library for those who could afford it. Knowing how most governing bodies enjoy their rhetoric and tend to drag their feet when it comes to putting their money where their mouth is, we'll have to wait and ... Read more

Words in Pictures App for autistic children
Review posted Thu 6 Mar '14

According to Wikipedia, Autism is defined as ' a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication and by restricted, repetitive or stereotypical behavior.' Sufferers, more often than not young children, regularly have trouble understanding concepts that can generally only be solved using pictures to back up vocabulary and diligent parents will spend hours at home setting up image cards to help kids understand better, the world that they live in. A year or so back, an Italian developer - aided by a team of neuropsychiatrists, speech therapists, educators and parents from all over ... Read more
