Of all the free apps designed to keep tabs on what you and your friends owe each other this is one of the simplest and quickest to set up but does lack flexibility. Currently only supported by Gmail you can log in to enable the site to remember your data or just use it as a one off for fun without logging in.
It can be used for just about any group activity like a night out with drinks and food to a joint trip away or even a flat sharing scenario. The one thing I would say here though is the lack of any function allowing you to enter repayments between group members means that once the slate is wiped clean you have to set up a new group. In the case of a flat share where the members are constant this might not be the best solution available.
Having said that it’s quite fun to see how the system calculates the easiest way to balance the books. Setting up a group is easy; give it a name, enter the names of the members and the event title. Once you’ve done that you can enter an expense amount and who paid the bill.
It all sounds great but a simple example like this, where one person pays and the rest of the group subsequently owe an equal amount, is probably as good as it gets. If say a couple of the group paid the bill between them there doesn’t appear to be a simple way to show the split without setting up a completely new expense template.
The resulting report is fun though and contains arrows indicating who owes who and in what amounts. These are not always equal if more than one person is owed money and the suggested settlement formula could get group members searching for a calculator to check the numbers.
Like I said, it’s fun but the calculator would kind of defeat the object.
Conclusion
It’s free and will appeal to some groups of people although sophisticated it isn’t. I can however see it being used as an entertaining prompt when a group of friends includes a member who consistently suffers from short arms and long pockets.
