Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal-derived products with an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of sentient animals. Dietary vegans (or strict vegetarians) refrain from consuming all animal related products. This means meat, fish, chicken, eggs, dairy products and all other animal-derived substances. A trip to the supermarket however, often turns into a nightmare for vegans, because of the often confusing ingredient labeling on many of the items. Vegan Scanner lets you scan the item's barcode with your iOS or Android's camera and get information about the product.

As a vegan, when in the supermarket buying groceries, it can be a very dodgy thing to have to rely on the label to tell you exactly what is in the product that you want to buy. Information on the ingredients can be incorrect or misleading while many of the ingredients aren't even known to the consumer. Rather than scouring the internet for information, Vegan Scanner is a brand new food and drink app for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android that does that does the job for you. Consumers can simply scan the barcode on the food packaging with their smartphone camera and you'll receive an appraisal of the product. This eliminates the need to manually read over each grocery item and can catch animal derived ingredients that you may have missed or were unaware of. You can get an idea which products you should buy based on previous scans or see the most popular items in you area. Originally, the scanner was developed specifically for vegans but it now also recognizes whether products fit in with the vegetarian philosophy too. The developers are planning to do more than just food appraisals in the near future with appraisals on cosmetic products amongst their next projects.

Any shopper looking for specific information on food products in the supermarket will know how difficult it is to find it. The labels are often confusing and misleading - not to mention difficult to read - and many are from different countries. Vegan Scanner makes it a little bit easier for shoppers to make the right choices with vegan products with this easy-to-use scanner that's like a QR code reader for vegans. Rather than just listing the ingredients of the package however, the app relies on crowd sourcing to provide appraisals on the suitability of the product. As the app's database is still young, they are going to need a lot of user input to  help populate the database and turn it into a virtual Wiki for vegans but the concept of the app is one I approve of wholeheartedly.
