The thought of sheet music immediately makes me think about very serious musicians in an orchestra or a piano musician in a bar playing Frank Sinatra classics. I'm totally wrong, of course, but that's the image that comes into my head. In reality more and more sheet music is being accessed by musicians over the Internet. Tonara is a sheet music app for your iPad that takes sheet music well and truly into the 21st Century by turning it into a fun and very cool interactive experience.

Tonara’s vision is to turn music playing into a fun, cool and interactive experience by offering innovative products that listen to musicians and help them learn, rehearse and perform.  Armed with the revolutionary polyphonic score following technology they are leading the transition of sheet music into the digital age. Tonara is the world's first interactive sheet music iPad app. It actually listens to you play, follows your place on the music score in real time and turns the page for you at exactly the right time. Other sheet music apps are passive and just display sheet music pages. You have to pause your playing to manually turn the pages. Tonara is the first interactive sheet music app which actually listens to you playing.  It is the only app that indicates your current position on the score and turns the pages for you automatically just in time. The technology is so robust that it will continue to track your playing whether you are a beginner or a pro, whether you stay on key or not, if you go faster or slower in certain parts and even if there’s a lot of noise around you. Tonara has received great reviews from CNN ("startup stars") to Wired ("will do to sheet music what Kindle did to hardback books").  Tonara is free to download, and comes with six musical pieces.  More music can be purchased in-app.

Tonara is as revolutionary to the sheet music industry as that brilliant guitar tuning app was for the guitarist. This free app not only follows your notes as you play them but also turns the page for you at exactly the right time.at it's a very crisp looking app for the iPad that is very easy to use and navigate. It looks as though Tonara has drawn a line in the sand here and all others will be compared to this one. If you use online sheet music and just happen to have an iPad tucked away you really need to have a look at Tonara.
