TMDb: The open movie database

We all know The International Movie Data Base (IMBb) and know it's reputation as the bee-all and end-all of movie related information on the Internet. What you mustn't do is get it mixed up with this movie directory tool called themoviedb (TMDb.) Whereas many think IMDB is a little cold but filled with information, TMDb is a film site totally controlled by movie fans like yourself.
   
themoviedb.org is a free and open movie database and is completely user driven by it's contributors - the general public. TMDb is currently used by millions of people every month and with a powerful application program interface (API) also used by many popular media centers like Moovida, XBMC, Plex, MythTV and MediaPortal. Within the walls of TMDb is a plethora of movie related fun. There are sections on all the new movies with reviews and pictures from the film as well as cross related biographies of all the big stars. There are also sections on the most popular films of all time and whats on at the movies now. All rated by people like you. TMDb was started in the fall of 2008 as a side project in order to help serve high resolution poster and fan art for the popular XBMC project. What started as just a simple single page linked with some zip files has morphed into one of the most active user built movie databases on the entire Internet. When serving a number of zip files was no longer enough they set out to create a full user created and managed database. By January 2009, they had launched "version 1" and a number of API methods. Support for TMDb continued to grow and most of the world's media centers started introducing support along with hundreds of 3rd party applications.

Conclusion
It's always good to have an impartial view - especially when we are talking movies. Everyone has their own view. The real beauty of TMDb though is it's attractive interface. Whereas, IMDB tends to be messy and unattractive to plough through, themoviedb is clean, sharp and modern. It gives you all the information that other sites give but in a simpler more user-friendly way. Reviews, pictures, links to trailers etc. TMDb is an excellent alternative to bigger sites with the added bonus of it's user contributions.
