The debate between kindle readers and physical paper book readers has raged for a few years now and avid readers seem to have divided into one or the other. Ebook readers love the ease and simplicity of reading a book on their kindle without having shelf loads of books cluttering up their homes while paper book readers love the pure pleasure of holding a book in their hands rather than a piece of plastic. Personally, I think the kindle has a fair way to go to fulfill its obvious potential. However, there is another way of 'reading' books that seems ... Read more

Everyone loves Sherlock Holmes adventures. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's timeless adventures sit alongside Agatha Christie as doyens of the murder mystery. Words in Pictures App for autistic children
Review posted Thu 6 Mar '14

According to Wikipedia, Autism is defined as ' a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication and by restricted, repetitive or stereotypical behavior.' Sufferers, more often than not young children, regularly have trouble understanding concepts that can generally only be solved using pictures to back up vocabulary and diligent parents will spend hours at home setting up image cards to help kids understand better, the world that they live in. A year or so back, an Italian developer - aided by a team of neuropsychiatrists, speech therapists, educators and parents from all over ... Read more

Quite simply, Ebook Glue is an easy way to convert your written content, like your blog for example, into a downloadable and nicely designed ebook that you can share with your friends and the rest of the world. And while the app is effectively a commercial ebook converter with pricing plans that cater for anything from 1500 conversions to nearly 40,000, there is also a free plan for smaller bloggers that lets you convert up to 25 items each month. EBook Glue gives bloggers the chance to create their own ebook without having to do any of the typesetting and ... Read more

A novel new kind of vampire ebook

Carmilla Meet one scary girl
Review posted Fri 24 May '13

Despite the fact that ebooks have taken off to the extent that Amazon's ebooks now sell more digital books than paper ones, I still feel that there is something missing with the format. It's just not the same as picking up a book and reading it from cover-to-cover. The ebook needs to deliver more to convince the rest of us non believers that it has something else to offer besides a kindle. And this iOS application could well be the kind of thing to convince me. Carmilla is a new app by DraculApps (yep, you heard it right) that not ... Read more

Turn your Facebook updates, photos and memories into a real-life coffee table book

Likebook My life in a book
Review posted Tue 14 May '13

It seems kind of ironic to even contemplate turning Facebook into a coffee table book. After all, the most successful social media experiment in history has effectively replaced paper in many cases - especially when it comes to photo sharing. But, how about if I said to you that you could have a beautiful coffee table book filled with all your status updates and photos from your Facebook history. Would you think I was mad? Well, that is exactly what Likebook is. You can have your Likebook - in soft or hard cover - delivered quickly to your door and ... Read more

Review posted Mon 6 May '13

Back in the days of paper books, researchers and serious book readers would always need a note pad handy to jot down relevant and important moments within the text so that it was simple to find those passages again later. Either that or there would be tiny scrawled hand written notes in the margins of the book itself. It used to be quite exciting to buy a second hand book and have someone's detailed notes explaining certain moments and drawing attention to other significant passages. In the 21st century and with the popularity of the eBook at an all time ... Read more

Pilo2 An Interactive Children's...
Review posted Thu 21 Feb '13

Yesterday we reviewed the first edition of a new interactive 3D storybook application called Pilo. Pilo is a beautifully animated and multi award winning iOS app that, while looking great, is a real winner because of its storyline as much as its look. Now comes the second release in the series. Pilo2 still carries the same stunning 3D animation but this time the action is in the form of puzzles, music and more interaction to capture a child's attention. Choose a character, dress them up, play musical instruments and get them to dance just by tapping on them. This multi ... Read more

Review posted Wed 20 Feb '13

The introduction of the iPad changed everything in the world of children's apps. In fact, chances are, apps like Pilo probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the tablet platform. The iPad is very user-friendly and a great size for excellent viewability...not to mention the ability to add an interactive element. Pilo1 is a gorgeous real-time 3D interactive story book application for kids that has won numerous prestigious awards worldwide. But the best thing about Pilo1 isn't simply the beautiful 3D animations. It also carries a story that will be relevant for every parent trying to get their child to ... Read more

A shelfload of movies and tv floating in the cloud

AirShelf Set your shelf free
Review posted Wed 5 Sep '12

Having worked in the movie and video industry for quite a few years I can spot a film buff at twenty paces. They are often a bit of a loner and can have weird obsessions with b-grade actors like Dolph Lundgren or Sean Young. You know the type. AirShelf is a nice and simple free tv and movies application that is kept in the cloud. It's a place where movie and tv geeks of all persuasions can list and display movies, read reviews and watch trailers and then recommend their favorites to their friends in true film buff style.   ...
