I must be one of the luckiest people around. I’ve travelled a bit both for business and pleasure purposes but I’ve never had the misfortune to be eaten alive by bedbugs! I’m not quite sure what the people behind this site hope to achieve but I suppose they are providing a public service of some kind. Having said that I do think their mission to "report and follow bedbug information around the world" could be just slightly bordering on the over ambitious. There are a number of ways of interpreting the activity (or lack of it) on the site and some are good and some bad depending on how you look at it. Eleven months in and with only 26 reports of bedbugs posted you could be led to believe that the world is a cleaner place than they’d have you think. Either that or the site hasn’t been marketed that much.

My take on it is that people are probably more likely to write a scathing piece and post it to the popular sites like TripAdvisor if they’ve checked-in to a hotel alone but checked-out with a few unwanted friends nibbling away at their skin.

As a reviewer I should point out the basic mechanics of the site and they’re pretty simple. It appears that the word bedbug doesn’t necessarily have to involve a bed as there are a number of categories under which you can record your infestation horror stories including Mall/Shopping Center and Park/Public Places.

All of this brings me to the one big flaw the site will have to overcome if it wants to be taken seriously. For a start a public park will, at varying times of the year, be visited by all sorts of flying beasts that bite. Furthermore if you’re unfortunate enough to sit on a bus seat that has only just been vacated by a passenger carrying a flea infested dog then you’re very likely to get more than just a ticket.

Is this all really worth blaming the parks department or bus company for in a website rant?

There are places on the web that will get a much wider audience for hotel and other types of accommodation complaints. I do love the idea of bedbugs on a bus though!
