For businesses and traders who haven’t got the time, or perhaps more importantly the money, to create a website capable of pulling in enough custom to pay for it then Merchant Circle is worth looking at.

It serves both the shopper and the business owner in that it is a nationwide directory for local goods and services and a platform for promoting a business’s activities.

The site lists business under a number of headings like city, state, alphabetically or by category. Shoppers can also enter a name and see if it’s listed. A nice touch is each city page has a brief overview of the town itself with photographs and some recommended sights for the visitor.

Site users can also use this page to find any offers or coupons available and read business blogs, customer reviews and see any images uploaded. They can of course also write their own review following their shopping experience.

For businesses it’s free to set up and a promotional presence on the web could be up and running in minutes. With the ability to add blogs and photographs and constantly update and add to the profile, placement in search engine rankings will benefit. Advantage can also be taken of the site’s Ad Wizard feature to create ads not just for Merchant Circle purposes but for other networks like Google and Yahoo too.

The fact that customers can add reviews also lets listed businesses into a useful source of customer service and PR data that they’d struggle to put together independently. Knowing when it’s going wrong is probably more important than reading a whole heap of glowing praise and dissatisfied customers are more likely to express their true feelings via a review.

The site can also be used by businesses to create a network of useful contacts for use as a referral source. So as well as promoting a business to the nation via the web it also provides the tools to allow business owners to promote within the network.

Conclusion
I can’t see anything wrong with a site that promotes business and at the same time helps customers with their choice of merchant.
