Governments the world over are running out of money. They've committed themselves to so many things that there's not enough left in the pot to pay for important things like infrastructure and new roads. Consequently, they are turning more and more to private enterprise to fund new highways and bridges the world over. 

Naturally enough, these don't come cheap and there are now many roads that require a significant toll that needs to be paid so that these companies can recoup their expenditure. In the US alone there are now toll roads in 35 States and, in 2015, it was calculated that there were 5,000 miles (or 8,000 km) of toll roads dotted all over the country. 

Back in the early days there would be a toll booth where there'd be a toll keeper ready to take your hard-earned cash but later on this changed to popping coins in a slot and taking a ticket. However, as we move more and more into the age of technology, many are now unmanned and tolls are collected electronically using a tag system that collects the money automatically as you drive through. Having said all that, there are States out there that use all three systems.
