Snakes & Ladders is an awesome free app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
This game is based on the popular board game.
Originated from an old Indian game Moksha Patam which means Ladder to Salvation, it is played between two or more players on a game board that has numbered gridded squares.
The goal is to reach the last or highest numbered square on the board.
The concept behind this game was the balance between good and evil. The ladders symbolize positive consequences of doing a good deed, hence moving the player up.
The snakes represent evil acts and the negative result, thus you go back down. The game's popularity is based on its ability to teach players the effects of good deeds against the bad.
A number of "ladders" and "snakes" are pictured on the board, each connecting two specific board squares.
Players have to roll a dice to determine the number of moves to take. If a player lands on the lower part of a ladder, he or she will move up to the upper part. On the other hand, completing a move on the head of a snake will have the player moving down to the square corresponding to the snake's tail. Players have to roll the dice and keep trying to beat each other to the last square.
The most widely known version of Snakes and Ladders in the United States is that of Milton Bradley's Chutes and Ladders. Using a ten by ten grid with a playground theme, the drawings show moral lessons. The bottom of a ladder shows a kid doing a good deed and the top shows
the same child reaping the rewards. The head of the snake displays bad behavior and the tail illustrates the consequences.
For the iOS application, the 10x10 grid is carried over albeit without the graphical representations of good and bad deeds. Plain snakes and ladders are shown instead. The user can just touch or tap to roll the dice. After some 3D animation, the player is then moved automatically according to the result. The app is for one player against the artificial intelligence or computer on the device. The game sounds can be turned on or off by the user by clicking the sound icon.
