[cont'd] personal danger involved, I'm hearing you say? Well, once you've signed up you will be given a list of license plates of all the vehicles that have been stolen within 50 miles of your location. You'll also get a description of the vehicle along with a map showing its last known location. If you spot one of the vehicles and it matches the plate and description on the list you can take a photo of the plate and register it through the app. Alternatively, you can simply report it to your local law enforcement agency before registering it with StolenCar.com. StolenCar will check it against their extensive local and national stolen car databases and, if you are the first to register it and it's proven to be stolen, you get the reward. It's as simple as that.
The FBI released a report recently stating that the combined theft of all vehicles in the US and Canada added up to an astonishing US$7 billion in losses annually so you can see that there's a lot of money on the table here. That averages out to about $7,680 per theft. This constitutes a huge financial loss for companies and individuals who haven't taken out theft insurance, not to mention the vast cost to insurance companies themselves. Let's not forget that much of that cost gets passed on to all of us via higher premiums.
