Being a bit of an artist in my spare time, I've been looking at a lot of clouds lately. The most amazing thing about them is that, apart from their basic atmospheric structure, every single one of them is completely different. Unfortunately, most of the apps that track and inform us about our weather, tend not to be quite so unique. Here is one that takes its name from one of the most beautiful cloud formations up there and offers something a little more bespoke. Cirrus One has been in development for a number of years and finally gets its chance to add a bit of sunshine to the tired ... More
It seems that you can't turn the news on these days without being confronted by yet another story about the weather. Whether it be extremely hot temperatures and subsequent bushfires or floods caused by cyclones, there seems to be no escape from it. For most of us, however, it's not the weather from yesterday that interests us most - it's more about what we are likely to face when we walk out of the door tomorrow morning. There are many weather apps on the market but we are still on the hunt for the perfect one. Meteovista HD is the newest of these and offers a beautifully simple, very ... More
I don't usually take a whole heap of notice of weather apps, to be honest. I mean, they are literally only going to tell you a few things. How hot or cold it is, whether there is some form of precipitation and how windy it is. There's not a whole lot more you need to know. But occasionally, an app comes along that transcends basic information because of its sheer beauty and Idol Forecast is one of those. It is a customizable weather app for iOS that features the most glorious 'Disney-quality' animated graphics that change as the weather changes. It's one weather app that I will be more ... More
It's probably the introduction of devices like smartphones and tablets that have brought about the likes of an app like Startific. iPhones and iPad have their apps lined up so neatly and precisely within the interface that we now realize how pleasant and efficient it is to have all our accessible information laid out at our fingertips via their colorful icons. Startific is a beautiful, functional and customizable startpage where you can import and organize all your most important links, bookmarks, icons and widgets so that they are now just a fingertip away from access. Startific ... More
We seem to be more obsessed with the weather nowadays than ever before. Mind you, it's hardly surprising seeing the bizarre and often life-threatening weather conditions that have been prevalent in the last few years. Who said there's no such thing as climate change? With weather conditions becoming more and more extreme it could be more than useful to have absolutely up to date and very accurate information. It could save your life one day. It would be hard to imagine a more comprehensive, informative and beautiful iOS application than this one. Not only does EarthBuzz Weather look like a million dollars but it is filled with real-time satellite data on weather conditions worldwide. It also looks like it was made for iPad - the perfect platform to view it. While there has been a plethora of weather apps made available it's difficult to imagine one better than this unique free 3D masterpiece that, unlike many of the others, backs up its good looks with meaningful weather data. People who don't live near the water won't get this app at all. They will take one look at it and say "why would you want an app that tells you where the wind is blowing" and "why don't they just turn on the weather channel." But surfers and water sports fans will understand. They have spent too many times driving out to surfing or sailing spots on the strength of forecasts only to find the swell they need is further down the coast. Weendy was developed by water sports fanatics and forms a social network of communities. It's a place where you can interact with local social ... More
There are still people out there that believe that climate change is a myth but I think the more astute of us realize that, weather-wise, things aren't quite the way they used to be where the weather is concerned. Massive storms and tornadoes and drought across large areas of America. A couple of years ago in Australia there was a slowly moving flood that was the size of Germany and Poland put together. And we won't even talk about the Katrina floods. One of the most important things that has been learnt is that there is nothing better than an early warning of impending bad weather and ... More
Every time you pick up the paper these days there is another story about the wettest summer, the coldest winter day or the hottest overnight temperature. Climate skeptics will refute it, of course, but with floods in Australia and a drought in England you've got to wonder what on earth is going on. Personally, I don't think there is the slightest doubt that the human race is accelerating climate change but that's just a judgment call, I guess. The only way it will ever be proven is when we all go up in flames or drown in a giant flood. Voodoo Skies: Normal or Not? 2.0 is a free weather app ... More
There are apparently some 25 million lightning strikes in the US every year with around 400 people struck by lightning strikes and many of them on the wide open fields of sporting events. The most dangerous place to be, of course, is on the golf course where golf addicts always seem to want to play one more hole before the weather really kicks in. Now, I was always told you count five seconds for every mile that the storm is away, after the lightning strike and when the thunder sounds. Storm Distance Calculator works on this theory and, with a couple of clicks on your mobile, you'll ... More
